There are three main types of exercise: aerobic, muscular strength, and interval training. They each have their own set of benefits. Do you know which type Zumba is? The Zumba program is actually structured to incorporate ALL three categories. Woot, woot! :) This is awesome because you get the fat-burning and muscular toning benefits of an aerobic workout as well as the physiological and psychological benefits of interval training by using varying rhythms throughout the class. For example we might do a really fast merengue and then do a slower cumbia. Zumba fitness does not use a really structured form of interval training, instead we do “intermittent training.” So, for example, our class playlist does not follow a perfect high then low intensity pattern. Instead we might do a couple high intense songs, then a low, then a medium, then maybe a high, then a low, then a high, then two mediums, etc. It can vary class to class. The result is that you get a dynamic combination that really works!
